Baltimore Hunger Project’s Mission

The COVID-19 pandemic left no community untouched, exposing and worsening issues that have long existed, including a rise in food insecurity. Across the U.S., nearly 13.5 million households struggle with food insecurity every day. In Maryland, this challenge is especially significant—before the pandemic, 18% of households faced food insecurity, a figure that rose to 21% in its aftermath. Compounding this challenge, a 2022 Johns Hopkins study highlighted that 30% of Maryland households living below the Federal Poverty Level lack access to a vehicle, making it even more difficult to reach nutritious food options in low-income areas.

In Baltimore City, the impact is particularly harsh: by 2022, an estimated 33% of children were food insecure. Although relief efforts, including over $26 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding, have made strides, we know there is more work to be done to ensure that every child has access to food.

At Baltimore Hunger Project, we are committed to addressing this need. Partnering with schools across Baltimore City and Baltimore County, we’ve established a vital network that brings reliable support to children and their families. Today, we proudly serve 57 schools and over 2,200 children—and we’re determined to reach even more.

Each week, our team of volunteers carefully packs and delivers essential food packages to students in need. These packs do more than nourish; they offer stability, comfort, and the assurance that our community is here to support every child’s journey. Together, we’re working toward a Baltimore where no family faces hunger alone, and every child can focus on learning, growing, and thriving.

Join us in our mission to make hunger history in Baltimore. With your support, we can continue building a brighter, food-secure future for all.
