The Impact of Food Insecurity on Learning and Family Well-being

Imagine trying to focus on your schoolwork with an empty stomach. For too many children, this isn’t just a one-time experience—it’s a daily reality. Food insecurity, defined as the lack of consistent access to enough nutritious food, affects 1 in 8 children in Maryland. When children arrive at school hungry, they struggle to focus, have lower energy levels, and may face difficulties with concentration and memory, all of which impact their learning and development.

Hunger also has a ripple effect beyond the classroom. Families facing food insecurity are often burdened with stress, worrying about how to provide the next meal. Parents may work multiple jobs, sacrificing time with their children, which can strain family bonds and impact emotional well-being. Additionally, food insecurity can lead to health issues like weakened immune systems and higher rates of chronic illness, which add to a family’s financial and emotional stress.

Baltimore Hunger Project (BHP) works tirelessly to bridge this gap, providing weekend food packages to ensure that children don’t have to endure the long stretch of hunger when school meals aren’t available. With support from community members, BHP helps children stay nourished and focused, empowering them to thrive academically and socially.

Join us in the fight to end childhood hunger—because no child should have to choose between learning and hunger.
