It is estimated that 1 in 8 children in Maryland is living in a food-insecure household. That means 167,020 children are struggling with hunger. When children are regularly going without food the consequences can be dire. Without proper nutrition students start to display signs of adverse physical health, poor emotional well-being, and academic setbacks.
In response to this growing concern, we developed our Weekend Food Package Program in 2014. By bundling child-friendly, shelf-stable and nutritious food, we are bridging the gap between Friday and Monday by consistently providing weekend food packages to children identified as food insecure, in a compassionate and dignified manner. This helps them come to school on Monday ready to learn.
