We believe that every child deserves to feel cared for, and that starts with something as simple as a meal. Our weekend food bags are thoughtfully packed to provide not just nutrition but also comfort and hope for the future. Here’s how we make sure every child receives food with compassion and dignity.
Each week, our team of volunteers comes together to assemble bags filled with a balance of healthy, child-friendly items. Every item is carefully chosen to meet the nutritional needs of children. We focus on ease—foods that require little to no preparation, so children can eat without any barriers.
Our partners—schools, community partners and volunteers—ensure these bags reach the hands of students who need them most. We listen closely to the needs of each community, adapting as necessary to provide tailored support where it’s needed.
In Baltimore City, more than 1 in 3 children live in food-insecure households, struggling to access enough nutritious food on a regular basis. In Baltimore County, 1 in 5 children face similar challenges. These children rely on free or reduced-price meals at school during the week, but the weekends can leave them vulnerable to hunger.
This is where we step in—helping to fill the gap and ensure that no child goes hungry when school is out.
WHAT’S IN A WEEKEND FOOD PACKAGE?
Each weekend food bag contains the following core items:
We also include a handmade note of encouragement.
For us, it’s not just about filling a bag with food. It’s about showing each child that they are seen, valued, and supported. Every bag is discreetly delivered so that no child feels singled out or ashamed for needing help. It’s an act of kindness that respects their dignity and provides them with the fuel to focus, grow, and thrive.
The weekend meals we provide are a bridge, ensuring that no child goes hungry when school is out. With every bite, we hope to give children a sense of normalcy and relief—because we know that when hunger is no longer a worry, kids can be kids.
Without volunteers, there is no Baltimore Hunger Project.
